The two snakes appear to be in motion even though this image is completely static.  This another terrific example of an anomalous motion illusion created by Professor Akiyosh Kitaoka.  His illusions are very popular on this site, primarily because he creates some of the best motion illusions in the business.

This video, created by Christine Veras of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, pays homage to the early zoetropes from the 19th century.  The zoetrope consists of a cylinder with slits cut vertically in the sides.  When the cylinder in the middle of the contraption in this video is rotated, the slots strobe behind the cutout images, making the cutouts appear to be animated inside the empty slotted cylinder.  This ultimately ends up creating the illusion of moving silhouettes floating in space.

This video was a top 10 finalist for the Best Illusion of the Year Contest.

Hurricane Matthew is expected to hit the eastern coast of Florida today.  It is expected to be a Category 4 storm which could make it one of the strongest storms in decades.  I hope that everyone in harm’s way is able to evacuate ahead of the storm.  Stay safe!  Recently, a weather satellite captured a real creepy image of the storm as it landed in Haiti.  The storm, which resembles a skull, has an extremely eerie red eye.  According to a NASA scientist, the “teeth” of the skull are made from cold convective clouds.

Check out this anamorphic row boat created by renowned chalk artist Tracy Lee Stum.  It was painted on a sidewalk at Palm Hills in Cairo, Egypt.  Like all of her work, this piece of sidewalk chalk art is extremely detailed and very realistic looking.  I love how the guy in the picture has one foot on the dock and the other in the boat as if he were actually trying to climb aboard.  The lily pads and the shadows of the boat and dock are both nice touches to help make this work look even more life-like.

The Anamorphic Row Boat is an excellent example of an optical illusion. The boat literally appears like it’s floating on water, even though it’s drawn on the sidewalk in Egypt. It would be exciting for artist Tracy Lee Stum to create a larger vessel, like a Prestige Yacht. Most of these boats are over 30 feet long, which would surely be a challenge to create any illusion for the artist.

Truly Design created this large circular anamorphic painting called Space Oddity for the headquarters of a Switzerland-based company that sells apparel, footwear, and accessories.  The blue circle (shown in the photograph below) is clearly visible from one particular viewpoint located at the end of the hallway.  As the viewer walks towards the door in the background, however, the circle gradually loses its form.  By the time you get to the door, there is no resemblance of a circle at all.  Notice that the circle is painted on three different walls (including the ceiling).

A few months ago, Gene Levine created a Pikachu-themed stereogram based on the popularity of the new Pokémon Go game.  It was greeted with open arms as several blogs picked up the image and shared it to their readership base.  Due to this success, Gene decided to create a follow-up design featuring a different character.

If you stare at the pattern below, a hidden image of Charizard will emerge.  If you aren’t familiar with Pokémon (like most of us), Charizard is a popular character in this fictional universe.  GamesRadar even went as far as saying that Charizard is “hands-down one of the coolest Pokémon out there.”
